Loneliness Epidemic

I recently did a Google search for popular songs about Loneliness. Apparantly loneliness is nothing new. You might remember Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely”, Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Alone Again, Naturally,” and Al Green’s “Tired Of Being Alone.” One website features a list of one-hundred and twelve new songs about loneliness. New research from the Barna Institute tells us that three out of ten Americans report feeling lonely at least once each day. Our kids are certainly not immune to loneliness. Ironically, loneliness has been on the rise in spite of the availability of twenty-four-seven connections through smartphones and social media. What all of us need are real flesh and blood relationships to remedy our loneliness. When you are with your family, put your phones down and turn off the TV. Make sure you are connecting week to week with your church family. And, be sure your kids are involved in a healthy church youth group with peers and significant adults.
