Kids and Culture

One of the questions I get asked from time to time has to do with where to send kids to school. Concerned parents want to know if there’s a way to shield their kids from the culture by avoiding public schools, and opting instead for a Christian school or home school situation. It doesn’t matter where you live, where you go to church, or where you send your kid to school. Every kid can and will be influenced by the culture – the good and the bad – and it can happen anywhere at any time. No teenager is immune. When we fail to see the influence culture is having, we wind up losing the influence we should be having. Because we want to help our kids navigate through the influences, we should know the influences so that we can discuss them with our kids. When it comes to teenagers and their culture, what we don’t know or don’t want to know or refuse to know can hurt them. Jesus said that the problem is the human heart. And no matter where they go to school, they carry that sinful heart with them.
