It seems that with each and every passing week we hear of some new acronym that’s being used to describe an area of concern in regards to the health and wellbeing of our teenagers. One new acronym I recently heard is E-D-S. It’s short for excessive daytime sleepiness, which means you are overcome by an irresistible urge to sleep during the day. People with EDS feel tired most of the time, thereby struggling to stay awake, alert, and functioning during the day. While you and I might say that yes, I feel that from time to time, this has become a more chronic condition for many of our children and teens. One recent study of fourteen to nineteen year olds in Brazil found that seventy-two percent struggle with EDS. Two of the main causation factors identified include depression, smartphone addiction, nighttime phone use, and eating ultra-processed foods. Parents, keep an eye on your kids, intervening where necessary so that they get the rest God has made their bodies to need.
