Kenda Creasy Dean has written a book titled Almost Christian – What the Faith of our Teenagers is Telling the American Church. Creasy Dean, who served as part of the research team on Christian Smith’s well-documented National Study of Youth and Religion, issues a challenging call to the church and home to examine the nature of adolescent faith and how it got that way. She tells us that for years, the pressing question we asked was “How can we keep young people in church?” But Creasy Dean says that in today’s world, that’s not the question we should be asking. Instead, the more pressing question is this: “Does the church matter to our kids?” She points out that the National Study of Youth and Religion is telling us that in today’s world, the church has been unable to meaningfully share the core content of Christian faith with kids. Tomorrow, we’ll continue our look at this issue.
