Our kids are growing up in a world that is frustrated with institutional religion. In fact, one of the primary targets of this frustration is the Christian Church. This frustration is justified when expressed in response to pastors and other leaders who abuse their power. In first Peter five, Peter tells elders that they are to shepherd the flock of God, not domineering over those in your charge, but by being examples to the flock. This needs to be said in a world where there are so many providing bad church leadership. But as Dr. Michael Kruger says, bad leadership is not solved by having no leadership. Instead, bad leadership is to be replaced with godly, gentle, Christ-centered leadership. We need to look for and get involved in a healthy church where this kind of humble leadership is exercised. We don’t want our kids souring on the church because they see and experience bad leadership. We want them to see, hear, and experience the Gospel message of God’s saving grace in Jesus Christ.
