Embracing Suffering

We live in a current cultural climate that teaches our children to avoid pain and pursue pleasure. While none of us like pain and we do like pleasure, the reality is that we live in a broken world where pain and suffering do exist. God promises to alleviate all pain and suffering when Jesus returns to usher in the new heavens and the new earth and God’s shalom is restored, but we do live in that in between time where suffering actually becomes a tool for God’s glory and our good. You see, our suffering is used by God to take us out of ourselves so that we might lean into Him. It’s a kind of wake-up call he uses to conform us to His image. We need to teach our kids a good theology of suffering. The Psalmist writes, “It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.” Christian counselor Ed Welch tells us, “Suffering is God’s surgery that leads to health when responded to by faith.” Teach your kids that God is always at work in their lives, even in their suffering.
