As a man, I believe that one of the most sobering messages from Jesus about relationships and sexuality is the one found in Matthew 5:28. It is here that Jesus says, “But I say to you that everyone who looks at a women with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” The truth is that this statement speaks to a battle that all people face, both men and women. Lustful intent flows out of good desires that have gone bad as they have been broken by sin. And, in today’s culture, all of us face a barrage of imagery in magazine, on television, in the movies, and online that intentionally fuel what’s known as sexual objectification. This is our tendency to look at others in ways that only go skin-deep, leading us to view others as nothing more than objects of desire. The reality is that we need to raise our kids to prayerfully seek to see others and themselves as human beings, created by God, and instilled with inner dignity, value, and worth. We are not objects.
