If you’ve ever looked back at your high school yearbook, you’ve realized just how much the beloved hair and clothing styles you embraced then, look horribly out of style now. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are. Looking back with a “what was I thinking” response is common to us all. Over the course of last summer, this reality fueled a TikTok video trend that went viral which is known as the Teenage Dirtbag trend. Celebrities along with hundreds of thousands of TikTokers have posted videos featuring embarrassing and awkward pictures of themselves during their teenage years, all of it over a sound-track featuring a sped-up version of the song “Teenage Dirtbag” by the band Wheatus. The reality is that this is a relatively harmless viral trend that is self-deprecating. But it also reveals how the cycle of styles going from in to out has really sped up. Parents, we can use this an opportunity to focus our kids on developing their spiritual character, rather than trying to impress others.
