Parents, are you aware that each and every minute of every day your kids are choosing to live into some kind of story? In today’s world, the most pervasive and compelling story our kids choose to follow is that story which is laid out in the cultural narrative. This story comes to them through social media, music, film, education, the peer group, and more, teaching them who to be, what to believe, and how to live in the world. Because they are growing and changing, our children and teens are especially vulnerable to believing this cultural narrative. And, most likely, if they are believing it now, they will believe it for the rest of their lives. Missiologist Leslie Newbigin offers this corrective: “If the Biblical story does not control our thinking, then we will be swept into the story that the world tells about itself.” Parents, the apostle Paul makes it clear in Ephesians 6:4 that our great duty is to bring our children up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Are you telling the Biblical story?
