Marriage Is Truly A Mystery. . . 40 Years In!

Later this week Lisa and I will be celebrating our 40th Anniversary. Like all might say, “it’s been a blink”. . . or “where has the time gone”. . . or some other cliche that reflects the reality of just how quickly time passes.

I’m already pretty deep into the process of remembering and pondering. How can someone put into words what the Scriptures call “a mystery”? How can one explain the experience of two sinful and broken people coming together with no idea of what joys, sorrows, and difficulties are ahead for them as they commit themselves to each other?

A couple of years ago I read this in David Brooks’  book “The Second Mountain”: “An old guy is talking to his daughter about his love for his late wife. He tells her, ‘Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.’”

One tree and not two.

In hindsight, absolutely. So beautiful and so true!

  1. Thanks for sharing Walt. Carolyn and I celebrate 40 years of marriage in October. The root analogy is a great metaphor.
