It was at about this time last year that my football watching experience on television became incredibly annoying, thanks to the presence of an intruder that seemed to pop up on the screen every five or six minutes. I’m talking about all the ads for online sports betting apps. The ads have continued into all other sports, including major league baseball. I recently watched a game where the bottom right hand side of the screen featured stats related to chances that a player would knock in a run, get a hit, or strike out. As expected, more and more teenagers are getting involved in online gambling, which can be addicting. According to the national council on problem gambling, between sixty and eighty percent of high school students report having gambled for money during the past year. Presently, it’s estimated that five percent of eleven to seventeen year olds meet at least one criteria for problem gambling. The Bible warns us against the dangers of desiring and accumulating wealth.
