Kids Lost In The World. . . A Powerful New Music Video. . .

mobyEvery now and then someone sends me a message that leaves me speechless. That happened last week when Facebook friend Greg Lee, a youth pastor in Stockbridge, Georgia, sent me a link to a new music video from Moby. Remember him? Well, he’s got a new album out and it offers some social commentary that I’m guessing might leave you speechless as well.

The album, These Systems Are Failing, was released on October 14th. The song “Are You Lost in the World Like Me” is not only lyrically powerful, but visually sobering and worth watching. . . over and over again. That’s what I’ve done. I showed it as the opening to our “Reclaiming The Soul Of 21st Century Kids” day-long training this last Saturday.

I won’t spoil it for you. Just watch (below). And then think again about how Marshall Mcluhan warned us, “First we shape our tools, and then our tools shape us.” This is why discipleship that addresses every square inch and nook/cranny of life is so essential. Watch the video and then think about how necessary this is in today’s technological day and age. This one’s worth watching with kids and then talking about. . .

Look harder, say it’s done
Black days and a dying sun
Dream a dream of god lit air
Just for a minute you’ll find me there

Look harder and you’ll find
The 40 ways it leaves us blind
I need a better place
To burn beside the lights

Come on and let me try

Are you lost in the world like me?
If the systems have failed?
Are you free?
All the things, all the loss
Can you see?
Are you lost in the world like me?
Like me?

Burn a courtyard, say it’s done
Throwing knives at a dying sun
A source of love in the god lit air
Just for a minute, you’ll find me there

Look harder and you’ll find
The 40 ways it leaves us blind
I need a better way
To burn beside the lights

Come on and let me try

Are you lost in the world like me?
If the systems have failed?
Are you free?
All the things, all the loss
Can you see?
Are you lost in the world like me?
Like me? [x2]

If the systems have failed

  1. Walt, if you have not had the chance to watch “Black Mirror” on Netflix, you need to! It speaks to many of the same ideas that are present in this music video, technology, humanity, etc. You should check it out.
